Bone Grafting

Tooth loss and injuries to the jaw can result in bone loss that could impair the ability to place dental implants. In order to place the implant in the ideal position to ensure long term success it may be necessary to reconstruct deficient or missing portions of bone.  There are several techniques in performing bone grafts depending on the nature of the defect. You will have a consultation with Dr. Dhesi and after review of your medical and dental history a surgical plan will be created that suits your needs.

Sinus Lift

The key to success of a dental implant is the quantity and quality of bone that remains after a tooth is lost. Due to its proximity to your sinuses, the rear upper jawbone is regarded as one of the most difficult areas to successfully place dental implants.

Sinuses essentially function as airways allowing air to pass, much like an empty room. Some of the roots in your upper teeth extend up into your sinuses. When these teeth are removed, only a thin wall of bone separates your sinus cavity from your mouth. As this bone heals following tooth removal, the sinus expands in size, further reducing the bone available for placement of dental implants. Fortunately, this problem can be corrected with a sinus lift procedure.

Leukocyte-Platelet Rich Fibrin

Dr. Dhesi has been working with L-PRF in his practice since 2013 and has seen excellent results ever since. Leukocyte-platelet rich fibrin introduces a high concentration of the patients’ own blood platelets to the surgical site to accelerate the healing process. It promotes early ingrowth of blood vessels to promote bone and soft tissue growth. The platelets are from the patients’ own blood, so it is a safe and innovative treatment option.

General Tooth Extraction

It may be necessary to extract teeth due to the presence of extensive decay, infection, bone loss or irreparable damage. Sometimes, there is insufficient room in the mouth to accommodate teeth and extraction may be necessary.

Routine tooth extraction can often be performed with local anesthesia alone, however you may decide sedation is the best option for you. This will be discussed with you when you see Dr. Dhesi for evaluation and formulation of a treatment plan. Dr. Dhesi will also discuss replacement options with you and work with your referring dentist.

Impacted Tooth Exposure

Most of the time teeth will follow a path of eruption into the oral cavity during growth and development of the jaw. At times, there may not be enough room in the mouth to allow for a tooth to erupt past the gums. The most common teeth to become impacted are the canines and wisdom teeth.  Wisdom teeth are often recommended for removal, regardless of impaction. But canine teeth are important to the bite and function of the mouth. Dr. Dhesi will work together with your Orthodontist to help the tooth come into the arch.
